How to get a job in the hidden job market
What's the deal with the hidden job market? Why is everyone always talking about it? What is it?

The hidden job market is comprised of jobs that are filled before they are advertised. It is estimated that about 75% of all jobs are in the hidden job market.
Why? Because employers hate to hire. The hiring process is extremely expensive and time-consuming.
They have to advertise the opening, sort through hundreds of resumes and spend weeks, sometimes even months interviewing and trying to select the perfect applicant.
Employers only hire when they have a need to be fulfilled, and even in that situation they will avoid actively seeking applicants as long as they possibly can.
So how does this help you? How can you find jobs that are in the hidden job market? Most importantly, how can you get interviews for jobs in the hidden job market?
One way is to network - which we briefly discussed in Part One of this course.
While that is one very effective way to find jobs both advertised and unadvertised, it's not necessarily the fastest way to find a job.
The quickest and most powerful method for accessing jobs in the hidden job market is cold-calling.
Employers love a candidate who is bold and assertive enough to go this route. Cold calling may seem scary at first, but it really isn't as bad as you think. Many people are afraid of cold-calling for two reasons:
They feel like they are intruding; they think the employer doesn't want to be bothered. We've already learned this isn't true. Employers like to be "bothered" by someone who can solve their problems or fulfill a need in their company - that way they don't have to actively seek out prospective employees.
What's the best way to find out if they have a need?
Call them up and find out!
The second reason people generally don't like cold calling is because they are afraid of rejection. This is a logical fear, nobody likes to be rejected.
The bad news is, there is no 100% rejection proof method for you to use.

Work in the Company That Suits You
All of us want to make a glorious, fantastic and stunning career. We dream of earning a lot of money and at some definite moment delegating our business to our children. We plan spending the rest of our lives somewhere at the sea shore, in the country of the bright sun, warm climate, delicious fruit and cheerful people. Each of us has a desire to work and progress, we are full of ambitions, we are patient enough, we are fast learners, smart, energetic… With all these qualities we are a dream of every employer. But never make hasty decisions about joining a new company. First of all you should find out if your work in this company will be rewarding, harmonious and convenient for you, in brief, how well this company suits you.
Psychologists distinguish four main managing styles: authoritative, marketing, bureaucratic and participative. Being aware of the peculiarities of every style will help you to play cards right when preparing curriculum vitae to this or that company. The company with authoritative style has a strictly hierarchical structure: relations between the directors and subordinates are predetermined. This is a company for those who like fulfilling particular orders, those who prefer fixed system of relations and count on long term growth perspective. This is your world if you are used to take into account the slightest details and be satisfied with a definite position in the company. In marketing – oriented staff everyone pursues his own benefits. Units of brokers', associations of managers' refer to this category. These organizations are temporary and their aim is to make the highest possible profit in the shortest period of time. The basic law here is efficiency and the main aim is profitability. An employee should be independent, self- confident and have his own ideas for making money. Not everyone can stand such a tension. In these companies they value the opinion of every person but only in the sphere of his project. Sometimes your ideas can be stolen with out your permission. Bureaucratic organizations offer paradise for petty tyrants. It suggests heaps of useless paperwork. You can play either a role of tyrant or of a victim. But both of them are so repulsive, as for me.
Participative managing style is the most well balanced of the four. Every member of staff contributes to the development of the organization. They value your opinion just because a fresh idea is at times better than advice of the professional with thousands of problems. The company works according to the principles of an ideal team: everyone does what he is best at, besides he adds up to building up the ideal pyramid with small bricks. It is not always better for a person to work in an ideal company than to have his own business or follow the instructions. Thinking about your resume objective idea, think if you will be able to become an independent and indispensable unit of such company. Before taking over a position in the new company, make a preliminary analysis of the company managing style. If you rely on long term employment in this company, don't think you will adapt to its rules if they contradict your nature. Only working in harmony with your inner world will bring you positive results instead of constant fatigue and self dissatisfaction.

College Degree at Home …why go to college?
Finding the right college degree at home program can be one of the most confusing and important decisions you'll ever make. There are accredited online colleges, unaccredited schools and universities, privately accredited institutions, foreign accreditation and so on. For some adult learners accreditation may not be important but it can be an essential element if your goal is to enter a career that demands your college degree at home (or elsewhere) be "fully accredited."

Why not take full advantage of this option? Who knows, you may already have earned an associates degree and be well on your way to completing a bachelor degree.
Associate degrees are typically two-year college degrees, but by having your experiential learning evaluated and perhaps taking a few credit by examination tests such as CLEP, DANTES, and other such programs, you can accelerate your online college degree—and your career. And, don't forget that the same strategy will work for a four-year program as well. Some traditional colleges also offer credit by examination, but, by and large, the college degree by distance learning programs are more open to this concept.
In summary, you must choose the right college degree at home program. It is well worth the effort of checking out any college before you enroll and risk your time and money. Be certain that your university is one that will meet your career and professional goals and, more importantly, one that will ultimately satisfy YOU. Gather all the information you can about the distance learning college offering degrees in your area of interest. Learn about their credit by examination programs and policy on awarding credit for experiential learning.
